We offer pine, oak and ash furniture in a number of standard, stock ranges aiming to cover rustic, traditional and modern styles in well-made solid wood furniture. Procuring these stock ranges from specialist UK manufacturers and importers, we also offer a bespoke service making all kinds of pine and oak furniture made-to-measure.
Quality of product whether part of a standard range or bespoke pine and oak furniture made in our own workshop is at the top end of industry standards and matched by unlimited attention to customer care.
Timber
Valentine Furniture’s workshop uses only top grades of European pine and the best available oak, both European and the paler coloured American variety: note that ‘European’ and ‘American’ used in this context refer to varieties of tree and not to geographical source. Pine furniture is all solid wood without plywood or veneers. In bespoke oak furniture we sometimes use oak-veneered mdf for unit backs and drawer bottoms to make the piece lighter and reduce the cost, generally presented as an option during the discussion of specifications.
All the pine comes from sustainable managed forests, mostly in Northern Europe where the growing season is shorter making the timber closer-grained and heavier, where well-managed plantations yield pine panels with straight grain and fewer knots. Good quality oak panels are made from timber grown in managed, regenerating forests in France, Romania, Ukraine and Siberia, as well as other countries.
Joinery
Valentine Furniture bespoke furniture is made to the highest standards of traditional English joinery by qualified and experienced craftspeople. Design and construction of Valentine Furniture bespoke pine and oak furniture is generally superior to that found in cheaper imported lines.
Finish
We offer a variety of finishes for pine and furniture, in stain, wax, lacquer and paint. Generally oak furniture is oiled or lightly lacquered without added colour though we can stain it if needed. Some rustic pine furniture takes a five stage finishing process with stain and wax to achieve a characteristic texture and patina.
Response
Enquiries by phone, letter and email we acknowledge within 24 hours and undertake further correspondence and discussion action as necessary. Some enquiries for made-to-measure furniture may involve a series of draft specifications and diagrams to achieve the most appropriate result and we try to expedite these negotiations without undue hassle and pressure. It is always important for us to make sure that we fully understand customers’ expectations before undertaking an assignment.
Waiting time
For most standard range furniture which we obtain from other manufacturers or importers the stated lead time from order to delivery is 4 weeks. Usually it is quicker, if needed, but in exceptional cases there may be a longer delay in which case make this clear at the start.
For made-to-measure furniture we operate two workshop timetables. Smaller orders for single items such bookcases, dressers and tables we undertake to deliver within 4 weeks of confirmed order. More complex assignments such as suites of furniture, libraries or complete kitchens we schedule for 8 week lead times.
No extras
Pricing for furniture in standard ranges and bespoke is clear and unambiguous. Each piece of furniture on display in our showroom or mentioned on this site has a price tag or at least a ‘price from..’ indication that a range of sizes is available. These prices are for the finished furniture as seen or illustrated and include local delivery.
Most furniture, including all made-to-order pine and oak furniture is available in a variety of finishes with different stains, wax polish, paint and lacquer. Some of these processes may raise the price and delivery beyond 10 miles may incur a charge but such additions are shown clearly on the order confirmation document.
Price as finally shown on the order confirmation includes finishing, delivery and installation, if needed. There are no hidden extras.
Delivery & installation
Nationwide delivery in our own transport or by courier for smaller items is part of the Valentine Furniture service. Pine furniture in particular requires careful handling in transit to avoid damage and we take care of that. For larger furniture or where access is difficult, we send two or three experienced people to make sure that our furniture is safely delivered and installed.
Pine and oak furniture which we make ourselves, is designed with access and installation in mind, wardrobes in sections, tables with detachable legs. We measure doorways and awkward landings to make sure.
Delivery in and around York as far as Selby, Market Weighton and Malton is free and generally arranged for evenings and weekends if these are the most convenient times.
